202nd Battalion at Sarcee Military Camp

Sarcee Camp or Camp Sarcee as it was also called Since 1901, summer militia training camps were held in Calgary, initially at the Colonel James Walker estate and from 1912 to 1914 at Reservoir Park at this time the medical corps protested to the soldiers' clandestine swimming causing drinking water contamination, and with the outbreak of the war prompted a move to outside of the city. In 1914, several battalions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force were raised in Calgary, notably the 10th and 50th. Training took place at nearby Sarcee Camp, which grew enormously during the First World War. By 1915, administrative buildings were constructed and the first of the soldiers from infantry battalions, including the 50th, 51st and 175th, along with the 12th and 13th Canadian Mounted Rifles, occupied tents there when it first opened. Later the Battalions of the 56th, 63rd, 66th, 82nd, and the 89th trained at Sarcee In the summer of 1916 Sarcee Camp had the Battalions of the 113th, 137th, 138th, 151st, 175th, 187th, 191st, 192nd, 194th, 196th, 202nd, 211st, 218th and the ill fated 233rd as well as a unit or the Canadian Army Medical Corps and the Canadian Army Service Corps. There were over 10,000 men under canvas at Sarcee A journalist, at the time, outlined a day in the life of young soldiers in the 202nd Battalion which was probably typical. They started with a half hour of exercise on the parade square at 4:30 am, had breakfast of oatmeal, bacon, potatoes, and coffee, then went to classes in physical training, bayonet fighting, or rifle practice. Others went for machine gun practice or signalling. At some time in their training, the recruits were assigned to fatigue duty which could cover everything from cleaning the camp to performing some activity that was of particular interest to their commanding officer. After a noon break, the activities continued until the supper hour, after which they could play ball, write letters, or simply rest until lights out at 9:30. (from the Calgary News Telegram, August 21, 1916) "Sarcee City" with its commercial and recreational facilities, sprang up on the north side of the camp. Visitors would arrived, with their postcard map in hand, from the nearby streetcar. The camp later became known as Sarcee Training Area. The 202nd Edmonton Sportsmans' Battalion were at Sarcee camp from 11th June 1916 until departing for England on the 30th October 1916. So the 202nd Battalion were only at camp for 4 ½ months. Sarcee City was a small town that sprung up to the north of the Sarcee Camp. The businesses established in the "town" provided entertainment and necessities to the troops training in the camp. The stores and places of entertainment came and went but from what I can gather from the images I have of the 1915 to 1916 period the stores were as follow:- Chinook ~ Beer and Soft drinks And so on ........everything a soldier may have needed
